Description- WWII was one of the deadliest wars in the history, millions of people died, millions were injured, and millions of buildings as well as homes were destroyed. The two sides in the war were the axis and the allies, the axis consisted of Germany, Italy, and Japan; while the allies consisted of Britain, the USSR, and the USA. WWII started in 1939 when Germany, under the leadership of Adolf Hitler invaded Poland. Because of Germany's actions, Britain and France declared war on Germany which commenced the Second World War. Later, in 1940, Germany attacked Denmarkand Norway, followed shortly by attacks on Belgium, The Netherlands, and France. All of these nations were conquered rapidly. After all these successful attacks in the summer of 1940 Germany attacked Britain, mostly by air, but failed. The Battle of Britain was Germany's first military failure in WWII. Then Italy became part of the axis and an ally to Germany, and helped conquer Greece and North Africa. In 1941 Germany decided to take action and invade the USSR, they made swift progress at first against Russia's initial resistance, but the country was just too big, the army was too big, and when the winter hit the Germans weren't prepared, but the Red Army was. In 1943 after losing the battles of Stalingrad and Kursk, Germany was forced to retreat, and in 1944 the soviets slowly pushed them out of the Soviet Union, and in 1945 pushed them back into Germany itself. On December 7, 1941 Japan launched a surprise attack on the U.S.'s naval base in Hawaii that would be known as Pearl Harbor. The U.S. declared war on Japan the very next day and joined the allies in the war. In June 1944, American and British forces launched the D-Day invasion, landing in German-occupied France via the coast of Normandy. Soon the German army was forced into retreat from that side as well. By early 1945, Allied forces were closing in on Germany from both the west and the east. The Soviets were the first to reach the German capital of Berlin and Germany surrendered in May 1945, shortly after Adolf Hitler committed suicide. After Germany surrendered, Japan was the only one left for the axis and in the spring of 1945 the Ally forces closed in on Japan and heavily bombed Japanese cities including Tokyo, and in August of 1945 the United States dropped atomic bombs on Nagasaki and Hiroshima, and a few days later Japan surrendered ending WWII.
